Cal built a massive following through the FlashFame app by covering stories with plain no-nonsense facts and cutting through the media’s ‘sensational bullshit’. I’m also loving the recent trend in YA books which explore how much influence social media has on our lives and how teenagers can harness this in a positive way. I found it heartwarming to see them so comfortable with who they are and who they fall in love with. There’s so many more books out these days where queer characters get to just BE without question and it’s amazing! Cal and Leon’s budding romance has its fair share of turmoil, but it’s nothing to do with being gay. The protagonist’s father has been selected as a candidate for NASA’s next mission to Mars and without any warning, Cal’s unceremoniously uprooted from New York to Texas where his family joins the media circus that surrounds the Orpheus mission. I really enjoyed reading The Gravity of Us which has such a cool and unique premise. But when secrets about the program are uncovered, Cal must find a way to reveal the truth without hurting the people who have become most important to him.Įxpertly capturing the thrill of first love and the self-doubt all teens feel, debut author Phil Stamper is a new talent to watch. As the frenzy around the mission grows, so does their connection.
